Cantonese-style Rice Porridge at Congee Noodle House

When I eat at Cantonese restaurants in Vancouver, it is usually for dim sum or salt chicken lunch. When I feel like congee I think of only one place: Congee Noodle House.
Congee Noodle House is a very well known Cantonese restaurant, probably the most famous one in Vancouver.
If you come in from the back, you pass through a narrow corridor and get to see this small window into the kitchen area which is such a quintessential view of a congee kitchen. Notice the large pot of rice porridge with huge ladle ready to scoop up the delicious slurry.
The large front eating area opens up to a very large dining room to the right.
The main kitchen serving up all manner of congee is well designed. The curved bulkhead is a nice touch of class.
Moving on to the most important feature: the food!
Salted Chinese Donut $1.75.
I absolutely love Chinese donut with my congee. This place makes them very crispy which is nice because they don't get soggy when dipped into the porridge. Not too greasy either.
House Special Seafood Congee $7.00
The smooth congee topped with salted peanuts and shredded spring onion is a delicious affair. Hidden beneath the waves of rice porridge is prawn, scallop, squid and fish. I wish they would label what type of fish they use since there are certain types which I try to avoid due to health concerns, (basa fillets for example).
A multiple CRA award-winning restaurant, Congee Noodle House is a must for any visitor to Vancouver, and one which locals should frequent anytime they get a craving for that most simple and wholesome of Chinese comfort food: congee.
Long live Congee Noodle House!
