Tang Jai Yoo Restaurant, Yaowarat
85-89 Yaowapanich Rd., Chinatown, Bangkok
When we were in Bangkok, Dominic and I decided that the best Chinese food in Bangkok must be in Bangkok's Chinatown (a master-stroke of logic!) which is called in Thai "Yaowarat". We had eaten there before last year. How could I ever forget the suckling pig we shared for lunch one day!
The neon lights of Yaowarat.
The familiar sign for Tang Jai Yoo Restaurant.
We straggled in late at something like 9:30 at night, and staff were already washing up and getting ready to go home...
But fortunately there were still some full tables inside, so hopefully with Dominic's powers of persuasion we could get a small table for two...
And sure enough -- here is the owner with a smile on her face as Dominic says we came all the way from Canada to eat at her restaurant. Which is true of course :)
And so she let us eat late, and the food started arriving. First up, Seafood Kwaeteow. Last year we tried this same dish and it was unbelievably excllent -- a good balance of fried but still moist noodles and tender seafood.
Dominic likes soups, so he ordered this fish hotpot with Taro Root.
The setup is interesting, with a steel tray with ice holding the hotpot off the plastic table top.
My bowl of soup. The fish in this dish is one of those huge ones you see floating in some fish tanks around. You can tell by the bones how big this fish was.
This is another hotpot of turtle stew. Quite good.
