I had been looking forward to Indonesia again as it had been 2 years since I visited Tanjung Balai and Tanjung Pinang, which were all the more interesting at the time having taken fast ferry from Singapore. Zoos aren't my favorite tourist activity, unless there happens to be a world-class zoo or some exotic or unusual animal nearby, then I will go. In the case of the Surabaya Zoo, I went to see only one thing: Komodo Dragon! more...

Malang is a very nice city (pop. 780,000) in that the air is fresh, the pace of life is rather less hectic than Surabaya, and there seems to be a peacefulness about the place that would inspire one to move here or take regular holidays for R&R. more...

Even more peaceful and relaxing is the hill resort of Tretes. We took public bus from Malang which is an hour's drive, and basically wandered around on foot checking out the various hotels and inns that dot the slopes of this mountain town. more...

To get more flavor of Surabaya we decided to go to Madura Island. Boarding a ferry in Surabaya we landed at Kamal Port in Bangkalan. All we had time for was brief sightseeing in town, including trying the local durian, and hiring a motor wagon to take us into the countryside for an hour's ride. more...
